Biography
Elisabeth Thole heads the Van Doorne Privacy Team. Her specialisation is making organisations privacy compliant. She advises in areas that include processing personal data, the obligation to notify the data processing, transfer of personal data to countries outside the EEA, privacy statements, data processing agreements, and processing of HR related data, as well as the part played by works councils, whistleblower regulations, monitoring of e-mail and Internet traffic and direct marketing campaigns. Elisabeth is also an expert in the areas of IT contracts, e-commerce, outsourcing, and open source and IP aspects.
Her 1991 PhD thesis “Software, een ‘novum’ in het vermogensrecht; Beschouwingen over de positie van het auteursrecht op software in het vermogensrecht” addressed software as a novelty in property law, reviewing considerations on the position occupied by software copyrights in property law. Elisabeth publishes regularly and is a popular speaker on IT and data protection-related topics. She has authored several books on subjects including privacy (2010), IT contracts (2010), e-commerce (2001) and the Y2K problem (1999). Elisabeth is also on the editorial teams of Privacy & Informatie, Tijdschrift voor Internetrecht, and Privacy & Compliance.
Elisabeth is a member of the Privacy Law Association (Vereniging voor Privacyrecht), the Association of IT Lawyers (Vereniging Informaticarecht Advocaten), the Netherlands Association for Information Technology and Law (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Informatietechnologie en Recht), the ITechlaw Association and the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA), where she is the Vice-President of the UIA Data Protection Commission.
Elisabeth has been nominated as ‘Best in Internet/IT’ for the Euromoney Legal Media Group Women in Business Law Awards 2011.
